Scott & Williams Step Up in 60-56 Victory Over Temple

Monty Scott scored 20 points and Warren Williams 16 -- both coming off the bench to hit career highs -- to lead Dayton to a 60-56 victory over Temple on Saturday. On a day when the majority of starters for both teams had trouble finding the basket, Scott and Williams provided the difference for the Flyers (12-3, 2-0 Atlantic 10). Dayton Beats The Bonnies 76-72

Dayton Thumped by Cincinnati 82-53

As fans, we saw this coming.  Close games against poor to fair warm up teams in a weak schedule.  Now, critics who called the Flyer's unbeaten record the softest 9-0 in the country, may have been correct.  UC came out with fire and Dayton responded with turnover after turnover (28 in total).  Keith Waleskowski had his worst game this year, fouling out and seeing limited playing time.  The flustered Flyers (9-1) threw away their best season-opening streak since 1955-56. Dayton won its first nine by surviving a few close calls against overmatched teams, including two-point wins over Wagner and IUPUI.

Game Preview: UD vs. UC

Dayton will get its first real test of the season when it plays at Cincinnati on Tuesday in a battle of unbeatens.  The 14th-ranked Flyers (9-0) are off to their best start since opening 11-0 in 1965-66. Dayton coach Brian Gregory said the 23rd-ranked Bearcats (6-0) will be a litmus test for his Flyers.  ``We're excited about it,'' Gregory said.  ``Our guys wouldn't be human if they weren't thinking about it. We'll find out where we're at.''

Dayton Flyers #24 in Both National Polls

The AP and ESPN Polls released today have the Flyers ranked nationally for a second straight week at #24.  Dayton retained it's position this week in the ESPN poll and moved up one slot from #25 in the AP Poll.  Both polls are good news for the club as a top 25 ranking ensures coverage on TV, Radio and Newspapers and grants exposure to the program on a national scale.  The Flyers next challenge comes against Prairie View this Saturday.

It Wasn't Pretty, But UD Moves to 8-0

Sean Finn lead the Flyers with 18 points and 11 rebounds in a hard fought 61-59 victory over the IUPUI Jaguars Saturday night at the University of Dayton arena.  Keith Waleskowski chipped in 14 and Ramod Marshall 9 in the winning effort.  Dayton's poor performance from 3 point land continued in the game hitting only 5-26 for 19% and an overall 39% from the floor.

Flyers 7-0 After Hard Fought Victory Over Cajuns

The 24th ranked Flyers found themselves down at halftime by 9 but went on a 14-0 run to start the second half and take control of the game behind solid defense and rebounding efforts.  Still turnovers and poor 3 point shooting plagued Dayton.  The Cajuns, missing a number of their starters for this game appeared to have the Flyers number, but Dayton held on to pull the game out in the final minutes.  The final score, 66-59.

Dayton Ranked #25 & #24 - Face Ragin' Cajuns

Monday's national rankings for Division 1 have been released and the Dayton Flyers appear to have caught the eyes of the pollsters coming in at #25 in the AP Poll and #24 in the Coaches Poll after being unranked previously this season.  Dayton will have their first chance to defend their ranking tonite as they go up against the Ragin' Cajuns (1-1) of Louisiana-Lafayette.

Flyers Win The Maui Invitational 82-72

The game was at times, painful to watch but the Flyers and head coach Brian Gregory hung in there and came back to erase an 8 point deficit at half time and go on to win by 10, 82-72.  Ramod Marshall led Dayton with 27 but the gritty play of Keith Waleskowski earned him the tournament MVP.  Could a top 25 ranking for the Flyers be next on Monday?  We at UDFlyers.com are skeptical, but 3 days of national exposure on ESPN and the Maui Classic crown certainly can't hurt.

Purnell & Dayton Fall Short Again in the Big Dance

Oliver Purnell's jinx continues as he and the Dayton Flyers were unable to get past their first round opponent Tulsa in a disappointing loss, 84-71.  Purnell as head coach at Dayton has yet to get past the first round of the NCAA Tournament.  The Golden Hurricanes came out strong in the first half while Dayton appeared sleepy at best and couldn't buy a basket at times, especially from 3 point land.  UD made a run at Tulsa late in the second half but it was a case of a little too little, a little too late.  The Flyers are the only seed above a 5 to loose in the first round this year so far.

The lingering questions have been answered.  According to 107.7 WNSA, St. Bonaventure has announced that that their team has voted not to play their two remaining games this week which included an away game at UMass and at home vs. Dayton on Saturday.  With that forfeit, the Flyers 2003 regular season is now in the record books and will finish up 21-5 overall and 14-2 in Atlantic 10 league play.  Dayton gets the credit of a forfeit for league play purposes but it adds nothing to their overall record.  (posted 3.4.03)
